Do I Need a TPMS When Going Offroading
Offroading takes your vehicle far beyond the conditions of normal road driving. That change in environment has a direct impact on your tyres. Rough terrain, sharp rocks, sand, mud and snow all affect your tyres in various different ways.

At the same time, offroading often happens in remote areas where help isn’t immediately available. A tyre failure in these conditions isn’t just inconvenient - it can quickly become a safety risks. Being able to detect tyre issues early becomes critical when you’re hours away from the nearest town.
In theory, you could manually check tyre pressures throughout your trip but in practice this is rarely realistic. Constantly stopping and checking each tyre is time-consuming and often impractical in challenging terrain. This is where real-time monitoring through a TPMS system becomes especially valuable for offroad driving.
Different terrains require very different tyre pressures, and getting this right is one of the most important parts of safe and effective offroading. Each surface has its own ideal range and trade-offs.
Tyre Pressure for Driving on Sand
When driving on sand, lowering tyre pressure increases the tyre’s contact patch, helping the vehicle “float” rather than dig in. You’ll typically need to significantly deflate your tyres but it’s important not to go too low. That increases the risk of the tyre coming off the rim or overheating at higher speeds. Once back on firmer ground, tyres must be re-inflated promptly to avoid damage and maintain safe handling.
- Soft, Deep Sand: Roughly 5-15 PSI. This range maximises flotation and is ideal when the sand is loose.
- Medium Sand: Roughly 15-20 PSI. A good starting point for many 4WDs - you can fine-tune based on how your vehicle responds.
- Firm, Wet or Compact Sand: Up to 18-22 PSI. Firm sand closer to waterlines supports higher pressures while still benefiting from increased footprint.

Tyre Pressure for Driving on Off-Road Dirt Tracks
On dirt roads and light off-road tracks, tyre pressures is usually kept closer to standard highway settings. Slight reductions can help improve grip and comfort over corrugations and uneven surfaces, but drastic deflation is generally unnecessary.
- General Dirt Tracks: Roughly 25-32 PSI. This is a common sweet spot that expands the footprint for grip while keeping enough stiffness for steering response.
- Rougher, Corrugated or Loose Dirt Roads: Roughly 20-28 PSI. Lowering pressures slightly more can help tyres absorb bumps and maintain traction over corrugations.

Tyre Pressure for Driving on Mud
Mud driving often benefits from moderately reduced tyre pressures to help tyres conform to ruts and improve grip by increasing surface contact. However, going too low can cause tyres to lose their ability to self-clean, making it easier for mud to pack into the tread and reduce traction further. The right pressure depends heavily on mud depth and consistency, so adjustments are usually made in small increments based on conditions.
- General Muddy Tracks: Roughly 20-25 PSI. This is a widely recommended starting point that balances traction across different types of mud.
- Moderate, Gooey Mud: Roughly 18-20 PSI. For deeper, softer mud where you need a larger contact patch.
- Firm Muddy Surface With Solid Base: Slight reductions from normal off-road pressure (e.g., only a few PSI lower).

Tyre Pressure for Driving on Gravel Roads
Gravel roads typically require only minor adjustments to tyre pressure compared to normal highway driving. In most cases, a slight reduction can help improve grip and reduce the harsh impact of loose stones on the suspension and tyres. However, it’s important not to deflate tyres too much on gravel. Over-reducing pressure can increase sidewall flex and make the vehicle feel less stable, particularly in corners or when braking.
- Well-Maintained Firm Gravel Surface: Roughly 28-36 PSI or slightly below on-road pressures.
- Rough or Corrugated Gravel: Roughly 26-32 PSI. A common choice since slightly lower pressure can soften the ride and increase contact area for grip.

Tyre Pressure for Driving on Snow
Unlike sand driving, where very low pressures may be used, snow driving usually calls for only small reductions from normal road pressure. Going too low can reduce steering precision and increase the risk of the tyre losing structural stability in cold conditions.
- Standard On‑Road Cold Tyre Pressure: Typically around 30-35 PSI (check your vehicle’s placard or manual for specific cold pressure).
