TPMS vs Manual Checks
Keeping your tyres at the correct pressure is a simple way to improve safety, fuel efficiency and tyre life. Traditionally, drivers relied on manual tyre pressure checks to monitor their tyres, but TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) technology now offers a more convenient solution.
A TPMS is an electronic system that continuously monitors your tyre pressure and temperature in real time. Sensors mounted either inside the tyre or on the valve stem detect live pressure and temperature data. It then sends this data to a display inside the vehicle - alerting the driver when pressure drops below safe levels or when tyre temperatures become excessive. This allows drivers to identify problems early before they develop into dangerous tyre blowouts.

Manual tyre pressure checks, on the other hand, require the driver to physically inspect each tyre using a tyre pressure gauge. This process usually involves the following:
- Removing the valve cap
- Attaching a gauge to the tyre valve
- Reading the pressure
- Screwing the valve cap back on
While manual checks are still effective when performed correctly - they are often forgotten or only carried out occasionally. Tyre pressure gradually decreases over time, meaning issues may go unnoticed between inspections.
Convenience
When it comes to convenience, TPMS systems offer a significant advantage over manual tyre pressure checks. A TPMS continuously monitors your tyre pressure and temperature while you drive. It requires no additional effort from the driver. If a tyre begins losing pressure, the system immediately alerts you so action can be taken before the problem becomes serious.
Manual tyre pressure checks are far more time-consuming and rely heavily on consistency. Drivers need to stop and use a pressure gauge to check every tyre individually. This can become inconvenient for larger vehicles, caravans and trailers. Because the process takes time, many drivers only check their tyres occasionally hence increasing the risk of driving on underinflated tyres without realising it.

For day-to-day driving, TPMS provides a far more convenient “set and monitor” approach compared to the routine effort required for manual inspections.
Accuracy & Reliability
Both TPMS and manual tyre checks can provide accurate readings when used correctly, but TPMS systems offer the advantage of continuous monitoring. Instead of providing a single snapshot of tyre pressure, TPMS tracks pressure and temperature all the time.
Manual tyre pressure gauges can still be very accurate but their reliability depends on how often the checks are performed. A tyre may be perfectly inflated during an inspection but could lose pressure later in the day without the driver knowing. Some manual checks may not be able to monitor tyre temperature reliably, which can be an important warning sign during long trips or heavy towing.
Modern TPMS systems are designed to provide highly precise readings across multiple tyres simultaneously. For drivers who regularly travel long distances or tow heavy loads, having constant live data offers much greater peace of mind than relying solely on periodic manual checks.
Practicality for Off-Roading and Towing
For off-roading applications and towing trailers, TPMS systems are often far more practical than manual checks alone. Off-road drivers frequently adjust tyre pressures depending on terrain, lowering pressures for sand, mud or rocky tracks and reinflating afterwards. A TPMS makes this process much easier by allowing drivers to monitor pressure changes live without repeatedly stopping to manually check each tyre.

When towing caravans or trailers, TPMS becomes even more valuable. Trailer tyres are often difficult to inspect visually and can develop problems without the driver noticing. A TPMS can monitor both the tow vehicle and trailer tyres simultaneously, immediately alerting the driver to pressure loss or overheating before it causes tyre failure or dangerous sway.
Manual checks are still useful before trips and during maintenance, but they become less practical once you are actively driving, especially in remote areas or during long-distance travel.
